Georgetown, DE – March 30, 2026
Decatur exploded for 14 runs on 10 hits and withstood a late push from Sussex Central to earn a 14–10 victory Monday afternoon, pulling away early and answering every challenge in a high-scoring battle between Henlopen Conference programs.
Early fireworks set the tone
The game opened with offense on both sides as Decatur and Sussex Central traded runs through the first three innings, combining for 15 runs before the midway point. Decatur’s lineup jumped ahead with three runs in the first, three more in the second, and another three in the third, putting early pressure on the Knights’ pitching staff and forcing Sussex Central into a bullpen game before the contest had settled.
Decatur’s bats keep rolling
Decatur’s offense was relentless from top to bottom of the order. Landon Daniel delivered one of the biggest performances of the day, driving in four runs and launching a home run, while also reaching base three times via walks. Spencer Gaylon went 3‑for‑4 with a triple and two RBIs, and Johnny Hobgood was outstanding at the plate, finishing 4‑for‑5 with two RBIs and two stolen bases. Decatur showed patience throughout the game, drawing 11 walks to keep innings alive.
Knights answer with power and timely hits
Sussex Central refused to fold, using the long ball and extra‑base hits to stay within striking distance. Gage Hall provided a spark, blasting a three‑run home run and finishing with three RBIs. Lane Mears added a triple and three RBIs, while Caleb Rogers chipped in with two hits and an RBI. The Knights totaled 10 hits and nine walks, matching Decatur in baserunners but struggled defensively in key moments.
Raj steadies the game on the mound
After a rough opening stretch for Decatur’s pitching staff, Raj (#7) settled things down and proved to be the difference. Working 3.2 innings, Raj allowed three runs (two earned) while striking out five, earning the win and giving Decatur the stability it needed to maintain control. Bradley Means closed the door, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts to prevent any late comeback.
Player of the Game
Landon Daniel (Decatur) delivered in every phase offensively, finishing with four RBIs, a home run, and setting the tone in the middle of the lineup. His ability to drive in runs early and often helped Decatur build the cushion it needed in a back‑and‑forth contest.
Final
Stephen Decatur 14, Sussex Central 10
