The Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) is introducing a major overhaul of its school classification system beginning with the 2027–2028 academic year. The new structure, approved by the DIAA Board of Directors on June 11, 2026, will affect state tournament competition across virtually all team sports and remain in place through the 2028–2029 school year.
Why the Change?
According to DIAA, the revised Division I and Division II model was developed through an extensive review process conducted by the DIAA Competition Committee, with feedback from member schools and educational leaders throughout Delaware. The association says the new classification system is designed to:
- Create a more consistent championship structure across sports.
- Expand participation opportunities for schools and student-athletes.
- Utilize objective criteria when determining divisional placement.
- Establish a formal process to evaluate classifications and future realignments.
The new divisional framework is incorporated into the DIAA Competition Committee’s State Tournament Guidelines, which outline tournament qualification procedures, classification methodology, and division alignment structures.
Final Alignments Now Official
On August 25, 2026, DIAA announced the final sport division alignments for the 2027–28 and 2028–29 academic years. After proposed alignments were released, schools had the opportunity to appeal their placements through an approved review process. Those appeals have now been completed, and the final classifications reflect the decisions of the DIAA Board of Directors Subcommittee.
The approved alignments will determine division placement for state tournament competition beginning in the fall of 2027.

Moving Away from the Current System
Under the current classification model used during the 2025–2027 cycle, only selected sports conduct separate Division I and Division II state championships. Those sports include:
- Boys’ and girls’ cross country
- Dual team wrestling
- Boys’ and girls’ outdoor track
- Boys’ soccer
- Girls’ soccer
- Field hockey
Schools are presently classified based largely on enrollment figures. For the 2025–2027 cycle, schools with a Department of Education-certified grades 9–12 enrollment of 1,104 students or more are placed in Division I, while all others compete in Division II.
The new 2027–2029 model introduces a broader and more standardized framework that will apply across DIAA team sports rather than relying on the limited division structure currently in place.
What About Football?
Football will remain separate from the new Division I and Division II realignment model. DIAA will continue to use its three-classification system consisting of:
- Class 3A
- Class 2A
- Class 1A
The football classification structure is organized geographically and was designed to promote competitive balance, improve scheduling flexibility, address student-athlete safety concerns, and provide schools with more opportunities to compete against similarly matched programs.

DIAA officials believe the new classification system will bring greater consistency and fairness to postseason competition while creating additional opportunities for schools of varying sizes and competitive levels. By relying on objective criteria and establishing a formal review process, the association aims to make divisional placement more transparent and sustainable for years to come.
As Delaware schools prepare for the 2027–2028 academic year, the finalized division alignments provide the roadmap for the next chapter of interscholastic athletics across the state. The changes represent one of the most significant competitive realignments implemented by DIAA in recent years and are expected to shape championship competition through at least the 2028–2029 school year.
